The Fulton County Historical Society was incorporated in 1891 and is a non-profit organization chartered by the NYS Education Department. In 1972 the Historical Society purchased the Kingsboro Avenue Elementary School, built in 1900, for their museum. The museum is open May-October Tuesday-Saturday and has 9 rooms of Fulton County History exhibits. Highlights of these exhibits are replicas of a small glovemaking shop and a leather tannery. At one time Fulton County was the glove capital of the world and much of the history of this by-gone era can be found described in the displays and research library. Also there are Sacanadaga Valley and Sacanadaga Park exhibits. Almost all of this part of Fulton County is now under the waters of the Great Sacanadaga Lake and is just a memory.A new rail trail now covers the route of the Fonda, Johnstown and Gloversville Railroad tracks, but the "Ole FJ&G" lives on at the Fulton County Museum. Other exhibits include an Iroquois hunting lodge and artifacts, a firefighting exhibit complete with a working call system, a Mohawk Valley loom and textile making exhibit, an early farm kitchen, a Victorian room, many early photos and much more. The seasonal exhibit for 2009 will be all about the "Glovers Baseball Team" and Sports Historian Mike Hauser will display the many artifacts of his Glovers collection with the public. Some of these class C baseball players have gone on to become famous ball players.
After you leave the museum, one can eat a picnic lunch in the historic Kingsboro Park before strolling into the Kingsboro Cemetery to see the graves of the early Kingsboro Settlers and Revolutionary War Soldiers who are buried here. The museum, park, cemetery, church and little houses around the park are in a National and State Historic District.
In the off-season the Fulton County Historical Society holds monthly historical programs at 7 pm on the second Thursday of the month with the exception of December. There is no charge for these events. Please see the calendar of events page for upcoming events.
