Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site
All Three Stages of Erie Canal Development Side by Side

Schoharie Crossing is currently
CLOSED
until further notice
due to the recent flooding.

Lock 20 from the Original Erie Canal, filled in 1980
Marvel at the East Guard Lock, Lock 20 and a segment of the Original 1822 Erie Canal. Wonder at the Schoharie Creek Aqueduct and two locks from the Enlarged Erie Canal, Yankee Hill's Lock 28 and the Empire Lock 29. Nearby is the "Tribes Hill" Lock 12 of the Barge Canal that is still in operation today. Hike or bike through the site where signs relate the Erie Canal story. Picnic on the banks of the Mohawk River. Browse the exhibits at Putman's Canal Store at Yankee Hill or at the Visitor Center in Fort Hunter.

Activities: Visitor Center and Canal Store Exhibits, gift shop at the Visitor Center, self guided tours, guided tours with advance reservation, interpretative signs, nature trails, cross country skiing, biking, hiking, fishing, boat launch, picnic areas, outreach programs and special events.

Open May thru October, winter months by appointment.
Grounds open year round, dawn to dusk.

Schoharie Crossing is located just off Route 5S, about halfway between exits 27 and 28 of I-90 NYS Thruway.

Visitor Center Hours
Summer 2010 hours: open every day 10 am to 5 pm (except closed on Tuesdays)
